On the night of March 25, 1971, the Pakistan Army carried out massacres in the whole of Bangladesh, including Dhaka. In this massacre, 6 to 7 thousand ordinary people lost their lives that night in Dhaka alone. This day is known as National Genocide Day in Bangladesh. That day after 12:00 PM (early hour of March 26th) Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman declared the independence of Bangladesh and the liberation war began. Since 1972, Bangladesh has been celebrating March 26 as “Independence Day” since Bangabandhu declared the independence of Bangladesh in the early hours of 26th March. Finally on 16th December 1971 Pakistani army surrendered and Bangladesh won. Bangladesh is celebrating this day as Victory Day since 1972. 2021 marks 50 years since the declaration of independence and victory in the war. Hence the year 2021 is celebrated as “Golden Jubilee” to commemorate the 50th anniversary of independence.
